NYC ADVASION

1/4
NYC BABY! Although I have been to the city that never sleeps a handful of times, this time I got to tour some of the nation's top advertising agency's!
Every year AAF hosts two advasion trips: New York and Los Angeles. So, I couldn't miss on an amazing opportunity to get access into touring and learning more about advertising agencies.
The trip consisted of touring HUGE, Deutsch, Wieden+Kennedy, Edelman, and Omnicom. For each agency we visited, we got a tour of the work place and sat down with HR, creatives, and account managers to hear about their journey into the advertising industry and also the latest projects they are working on.

EDELMAN
DEutsch
To start off..Edelman was the BEST view of New York! Although there was more to the amazing rooftop they have...the view was breathtaking and of course pic worthy.
Everyone in Edelman was super nice. Hearing all of their stories of the cool projects they work on, UIUC Alumni who work there, and the current projects they are working on was inspiring to hear.
One thing I really liked about Edelman was the fact that several UIUC alumni sat down to talk to AAF as well. The place felt more personal and not just another advertising agency I was learning more about. Hearing their stories on how they moved to New York with knowing almost no one seemed scary to me. But they found a home in Edelman, which is something I would personally want in my work environment.
HUGE was well....huge. Located in Brooklyn New York, HUGE is a digital marketing agency, with a super comfy office look, with free mini magnets and pins that people can pick up (I grabbed like 10).
My peers and I got a special presentation made for us with super cool videos of what HUGE is all about, what clients they have worked with in the past, and their current clients. I wish I remembered the name of the awesome girl who sat down and talked with us, but all I remember was the cool hat she was wearing and showing us the artsy merch HUGE gives their employee.
HUGE really impressed me and everyone was nice. They even had snacks for us, like c'mon...how can you not like HUGE after all these yummy snacks?!
HUGE
Among all the agencies, Deutsch definitely had my type of vibe. We talked with one UIUC alumni about his experience at Deutsch and although it was great to hear about his journey...the person who really kept my attention up was the HR manager, Rebecca. Her energy was amazing to be present in and she made Deutsch seem like the most fun place to work and grow at!
Not only was she friendly, she had good jokes too. She kept everyone laughing and told some funny stories when working at Deutsch.
I think that is one thing I really like within a company, that although there is work, there is also a good balance of play. Knowing that there are people like Rebecca who are funny and can make a work place more engaging is def a perk!
W+K's office layout is well...amazing. They have a huge staircase in the middle of their office, that leads to their work spaces, creating a circular way in their office.
As for the people, I was not that impressed with who we talked to. Everyone was passionate about what they do and showed us their latest Vitamin Water campaign they were working on.
Wieden + Kennedy is one of the top ad agencies, but I did not get to see much of the work place personality as I had hoped for.

The last agency we visited was Omnicom and by far I think I really enjoyed this trip because it was more interactive.
Right when we all walked in, we were split into different groups and went with about 2-3 employees into one of their small conferece rooms. We were all creating our own campaign for our designated topic.
My group and I were given an app from a health company. After talking through about the most effective way to create an app that was transparent but also held privacy for its users and how we could advertise it.
After, we all regrouped and got pizza (i luv free food ugh). While eating, each group when up and presented their campaign proposals.
Omnicom really allowed my peers and I to have fun and get a taste of the advertising world, while educating us about Omnicom's mission and their clients.
